With 18.2 introduction of category inboxes in apple mail, even when selecting list view (top three dots in mail app) to return it to the old format, you still have the annoying new icons representing the categories in front of each email. I'm selecting 'list view' because I don't want to use 'categories' at all. Can the icons be removed from list view so that I can just see a normal/clean email inbox?

That doesn't appear to be possible at this time. Let Apple know what you'd like to see here:
Meanwhile, consider one of the many, many other email programs available in the App Store. It's possible that one of them will better suit you.

There is no message list
Settings > Apps > Mail > Show Contact Photos > OFF
Thanks for a way to opt out of dumbest update ever. I hate opening an app and finding it has been played with. Make it an option.

Unfortunately I don’t have a choice for “Show Contact Photos” just upgraded and HATE the categories.

My iPhone has divided my emails into categories. I am loosing important info as a result. How do I get back my emails without categories?

I do not have Message List anywhere so I can turn it off. I have done a search and restarted both Mail and Settings. I was able to get the categories turned off,

I agree with all the strong opinions here, thank you Platypus, I got rid of all these new irritating things thanks to your clear instructions - all gone.
Plus there could be something important to me that apple in its infinite wisdom does not categorize that way. Are you kidding me?! Makes me nuts when they do this stuff.
I have no 'message list' in settings. I did see there is a button for 'reset manual categorization' in 'about categories' in mail but it is deactive. Of course. So helpful.
