IOS 18.2 Mail - can't find mail (no category notification)

I'm trying to get used to the new Mail app. I've changed settings to get new mail notifications (Lock Screen, Notification Center and Banners for all new emails.

I get the App icon Badge alert properly but when I open the app, there is no indication of what category the mail is in. They only way to find it is to tap any category tab or All Mail, then there is a small dot on the appropriate tab.

It seems to me that if the app knows enough to indicate new mail in the app icon banner then it should know what category it's in and place the dot on the tab.

If there is a setting of some kind, I can't find it. Any help would be appreciated.
