Apple's AirPod Pro 2 Application for UK Hearing Aid Approval Confirmed

The MHRA have been telling people who call or email that they haven’t

received an application for the use of the AirPod Pro 2s as hearing aids

in the UK and it turns out to be wrong. They said exactly the same to me today and it is incorrect.

I spoke to both Apple and the MHRA on the phone today and it finally paid off.

The MHRA gave me a phone number for Apple and the women I spoke to at Apple was at the first level of customer service and escalated the problem. I had asked if Apple had applied for approval for the use of the AirPod Pro 2s as hearing aids for the UK.

I wrote to Tim Cook a couple of weeks ago regarding the approval for the UK for the AirPods and he passed my email to the Vice President of Apple Health who replied.

Fast forward to today with the wrong information from the MHRA and I emailed the information back to the VP about what they had said.

He sent me a copy of the document showing that Apple have applied for it.

I now have high hopes that things will happen soon regarding MHRA approval in the UK. It's been quite a fruitful day as so many were contacting the MHRA and getting wrong information.

Great to hear that the application is in.

i am travelling just now and have just been able to use the functionality (potentially very impressive) and it’s mad to think I’ll return to UK and it’ll deactivate/wont be available.

If you don't update it when you get back it will continue to work. Make sure you switch auto update off.

Well done getting this far and finding out. As a hearing aid user I had the pro 2’s for Christmas as I wanted to use them as back up aids, but more importantly to be able to apply my audiogram to media

what really frustrating is that I’ve discovered this function was available prior to iOS 18. They just taken the function from where it say before and moved it to media assist within the hearing health section of the pro 2 menu. That of course we don’t have full access to

after several calls myself I did speak to the health team in America on Saturday. I was told my case would be referred to the engineering team and I’d get a call back this Saturday with a progress update

you getting more information on the higher level functionality it great though

my wife has been saying I should return the pro2’s as they clearly don’t do what I wanted them for !!!

In September last year, I purchased a pair of AirPods pro 2 on the much vaunted basis that they can work as hearing aids.

When they arrived they simply did not work as hearing aids and I called Apple and was advised to wait until that function was activated in the UK.

I called again before Christmas and was told we were still waiting but to be patient.

Next I learned on line that they would not work with my iPhone X (this for the first time and some time after I purchased them).

I was advised by Apple to wait - I waited - now it appears that i have been miss-led.

Today I was about to buy a new iPhone 16 and I thought - I will check on line that the AirPods will work as hearing aids (as was advertised last year) with the iPhone 16 and guess what - they don't in the UK.

I just called to ask for my money back as I was sold them under what I consider"false pretences". In the UK it is "false advertising" to claim they can be used as hearing aids ! Apple refuse outright to refund my money saying that it is outside the 14 days by law that they claim I have to apply for a refund under.

When I purchased them it was not disclosed that they would not work in the UK.

When I purchased then they did not disclose that they would require a phone upgrade

Apple have not resolved the situation 4 months later.

Apple will not apologise or refund miss-sold customers.

And to cap it all the Apple "Manager" hung up when I stood my ground!

At the age of 73 after having purchased over the years many apple computers, laptops and iphones I cannot accept such total and utter contempt from Ireland for an Apple customer.
