New screen time password not recognized by shared device

I've "successfully" changed the screen time password for my kid's ipad (i forgot the old pword) from my phone. The devices are shared and the ipad (which has been reset) is logged in to my account; however the new password is not recognized by the ipad and I'm now locked out for an hour for incorrect pword attempts. Any ideas?
