Why is my external disc drive not recognized by my MacBook Air?

I have a 2015 MacBook air, and have a USB-connected DVD and CD drive, but when i plug it in nothing happens. when i tried putting a dvd in it, i hear it function and read the disc, then after about 30 seconds it just ejects the dvd. can someone tell me why this is happening

I have a usb connected one but it came with 2 usb connectors in one end of the cable

as it requires more power than just 1 usb port can provide if it's the same with yours then maybe you need to find such a cable and connector the other usb connector to an ac charger

sort of like this one
