I have heard nothing back from TomTom about this issue, but I’m beginning wonder whether it is a Tomtom o/s fault or whether it’s Apple iOS, or more probably, something I haven’t understood about iOS.
From trying out various settings and playing around with connecting and disconnecting the Tomtom, I’m coming to suspect that under certain circumstances having an open connection to another device via “Personal Hotspot” is incompatible with having the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi.
Here for example is the warning from iOS when I try to change its Wi-Fi network connection whilst the Tomtom is tethered:
Following this here’s the workaround I have found that keeps my phone wi-fi connected when I want it, and allows it to supply a tethered connection to the Tomtom when we are on the road, without Wi-Fi. Obviously, there needs to be a mobile phone signal connection available:
- Keep the “Allow others to join” Personal Hotspot setting off in normal use
- Turn on ‘Allow others to join” when in the car and the Tomtom is on
- Check Bluetooth settings to ensure that the Tomtom is connected.
When next wanting to use wi-fi, turn off “Allow others to join”.

Are both your TomTom devices and iPhone updated to latest iOS and firmware? Have you contacted TomTom support team about this issue?
When my iPhone is paired with my Tomtom, it almost nearly always results in chaos with my iPhone 13's internet connection. EG, iPhone settings will show that there's a connection to my home wifi, but apps, including Safari, will say "no internet connection". I have followed Tomtom's advice: viz, checked Tomtom software up to date, checked iPhone iOS likewise, de-paired the devices, shut them down, restarted, repaired etc. This has not worked.
My Tomtom is fairly new but I have always updated it when an update is flagged. Likewise, I keep iOS up to date. I haven't checked the firmware as a) don't know how to, and b) I'd expect any system update to include firmware.
I'm inclined to suspect Tomtom software as iOS is extremely reliable and does not show this behaviour with any other Bluetooth paired device.
I am about to contact TomTom support team and if nobody else gets back with a report on this I'll post what they tell me.
Just an FYI, but while Firmware can be updated with a software update, that is generally rare with third party devices. Apps are a separate issue. And should generally be updated as often as available in my experience. Your milage may vary. Please let use know what TomTom has to say.
