Not receiving Messages/Reminders notification on my iPhone

This appears to be a big problem considering the number of similar individual posts I see on the subject. It is a big deal for me. I am ALWAYS missing (not getting) alerts in various conditions/situations/settings.  but mostly when my iPhone16Pro is locked. It started when I got a 15Pro right after I had upgraded from my Xs (which I loved). I then (usually wait about 5 years btwn upgrades) switched to the 16Pro as a trade-in hoping it would solve some of my problems with the 15, but most remained (the primary one the resolved was I wasn’t always having to reset at the carrier level to keep the 5G signal). Anyway, I am most desperate to get notifications/alerts fixed. The two biggest apps for which I am most affected are Messages and Alarmed. It is most evident when the iPhone is in locked screen mode, but that is not always the case. I’ve done all the things laid out in the various answers to date (not muted, not in focus mode, turned on, turned up, Lock Screen on, etc.), but nothing has resolved my problem.

Open for addn suggestions, and would also really like is a clarification of a section of: Change notification settings on iPhone - Apple Support (IN)

Choose notification sounds for individual apps

You can choose the sound that plays when a notification arrives for an app.

  1. Go to Settings - > Notifications.
  2. Tap an app below Notification Style, then turn on Allow Notifications.
  3. Tap Sounds, select a sound, then tap < at the top of the screen.

You can choose immediate or scheduled delivery for the app’s notifications and where you want them to appear (on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, or as Banner at the top of the screen), and more.

I suspect the answer is - it depends on the application, but none of the items in step 3 (except the info in the parentheses) appears for the vast majority of the apps I have (so no option to do so for Alarmed). BUT, they do appear for Messages and I have (under Always Deliver Immediately) both Critical Alerts and Time Sensitive Notifications turned on - yet I miss most text notifications (not conducive to a blissful marriage, BTW).  As far as Alarmed goes, I have used it for years, but only began having problems with recent iOS’s.  I really need the audible alert but even the haptic is suppressed.

As an experiment - to see if it was app specific - I set alarms for my evening meds on four different reminder apps, each separated by 5”: Reminders, Due, Alarmed, & Alarmy.  None came through while my phone was locked. When I unlocked it - I received a barrage of notifications (which is often the case).  I am included a SS of the settings for Alarmed, but all three alarm programs were set the same; for Reminders, I had Time Sensitive Notifications on.

I really hope Apple investigates this as, being an Apple customer since 1984, I have yet (to my recollection) to have anything this frustrating occur with OS or device changes. In the meantime, I was forced to regress to getting a battery operated alarm re-branded as a pill timer and setting it for my med reminders. I took my evening meds on time last night as a result of it going off, BUT would like to get back to using my phone since I am not always where the alarm is, but my phone is always with me.

Thanks in advance for any attempts to assist. Also, please up-vote this (or what-ever it is called in this group) if you have similar issues so maybe it will be investigated a bit more than it has. I would love it if it were something silly I have ignorantly missed and will gladly cop to it if anyone stumbles upon it; I just want it corrected.

P.S. - I have a sneaking suspicion that it may be related to communication between iPhones, iPads and MBPs all in the same house, but haven’t been able to pin that down either. Most of the time I am away from home at med time, I have my phone in focus mode, so haven’t experimented enough with that yet.

Here's the way it works:

iPhone locked/watch locked - notifications sound on the iPhone

iPhone locked/watch unlocked - notifications sound on the watch

iPhone unlocked/watch unlocked - notifications sound on the iPhone

So, it's normal and expected behavior for there to be no audible notifications on your phone if it's locked and you are wearing an Apple Watch.

As to why your watch isn't giving you any notifications. Do you have it set to silent? Bring up the Control Center by tapping the side button (flat oval button next to the digital crown and look for the bell icon. If it is just a white bell on a black background, it's not silenced. If the bell is on a red background and has a line through it, your watch is silenced. You might also check Theatre mode while you're there. That icon is the one with the two masks.

Another thing to do is to make sure that you have the haptic feedback set to prominent. In the Watch app on your phone, go to Sounds & Haptics>Haptics and set them to "Prominent." I found that helpful.

I really appreciate you efforts to help. Thanks for the overview.  Interesting. I had an Apple Watch 3 when I had my Xs, but do not recall not getting notifications of texts or Reminders on my Xs.  Not sure why Apple would not allow both notifications methods and allow individuals to set them up as it suits them.

The watch was not set to silent, but volume was not fully turned up, so I did turn it up. Was not in Theater mode. Appreciate the suggestion regarding Prominent haptics. Trying that.

Your responses printed me to explore and adjust the watch setting a bit.

After playing around with the Watch notifications, I did discover that the alert sounds are short and soft, but I may be able to hear them if they would go off. Additionally, after messing with a number of settings, I tested things again. The Alarmed program (which has more audio alert options) is working as expected again. I set an alarm for 5” from the current time, locked my phone, unlocked my watch and had it on my wrist. The alert sounded on my locked phone and appeared as a banner.  I did this about a dozen times in 24 hours. The phone did alert me (audibly) when it was locked and my watch was unlocked. This is/was the behavior of this app in the past. I am not sure what I changed that caused it to start working again (I don't recall having to not load it onto the Watch before) - but hope it continues.

It does appear that for Apple apps (Reminders, Messenger), I cannot get notifications alerts on the locked phone when I am wearing my watch as you indicated. I turned the watch volume up all the way and have the haptics on Prominent. I am experiencing better detection of my watch alerts, however, I am still not getting notified about all text arrivals(missed two from the wife today again). This is not a pattern I have yet been able to identify, but it is definitely still occurring. It may be that it is alerting me, but not at consistent volume as I easily hear the ones that do come through. For example today 16:44 get an alert on my watch of a text arrived from the daughter. Wife sent text at 16:56 for which I received no notification, then received a notification at 17:14 from daughter again.

Thanks again for your help. I’ll keep experimenting with settings. Although no settings were changed this afternoon text alerts were still hit & miss. I believe I have confirmed your review of the three conditions for the Apple apps and device lock scenarios, but/and I am definitely receiving notifications from the Alarmed app with the phone locked and Watch unlocked.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry, I meant to and should have covered that as well. Yes - I do wear a Series 7 Apple Watch most of the time. Sometimes it is not on my person in the evening. It; however, also does not give audible or haptic notifications either. Regardless, I'd prefer to have the phone alert me audibly. I have the watch settings on Custom so they do not mimic the iPhone (I tried it with that set to Mirror as well). So the Watch settings for each app are: Custom, Allow, Sound-On, Haptic-On, Repeat 3 times. It is my understanding that this setup should not affect what the phone does, but then again....?
