Final cut hangs when importing media

I've spent most of the day trying to get Final Cut to import media. I've restarted several times and tried importing just one file at a time. Finally I moved the Final Cut application to my exertnal drive, where the clips actually live, but that doesn't work either. Final Cut just hangs every time I try to import all but the smallest file and I have to force quit.

Is there anything I can do? Should I learn DaVinci Resolve? Never had this problem with Premier.

No changes since last time when everything worked perfectly. Lots of memory. Using the trial version of the program because it's a lousy program.

Something definitely changed.

You could delete the application's preferences: To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting the application and click Delete Custom Settings. The application will start with default settings and open an "Untitled" library. Adjust the settings, reopen the library you were working, and see how it works now.

And if the problem persists: Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.

But if you feel it is a lousy program, maybe it's not the right tool for you, and that's fine, there are plenty of other options.
