Apple Pay doesn’t work on iPhone 15 max pro

I’ve never used my phone for Apple Pay but I added my cards to my phone about July 2023 and ever since then, tapping the phone to use it has never worked, for any of the cards…I’ve tried about 6 cards and with different banks, including a wise travel card. It all works on my Apple Watch and when I pay for something online, but has never worked when trying to tap the actual phone. I’ve deleted and added the cards many times, but same result. Would this be an issue with the actual phone itself?

I suspect your iPhone has a defective NFC module. Apple Support can confirm using remote diagnostics. Another indication is your SEID number. Please follow this path,


iPhone > Settings > General > About > SEID > do you see all zeros or a multi digit number? All zeros indicates an error with the Secure Element.

I suspect your iPhone has a defective NFC module. Apple Support can confirm using remote diagnostics. Another indication is your SEID number. Please follow this path,


iPhone > Settings > General > About > SEID > do you see all zeros or a multi digit number? All zeros indicates an error with the Secure Element.

Are you using a VPN? If so, the software must be deleted, the profile must be deleted. After deleting the VPN the network settings must be reset.


If you don’t have a VPN, please reset your network settings too.

If you're using iOS or iPadOS 15 or later, tap Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings.


If you're using iOS or iPadOS 14 or earlier, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.


This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.

Ok so I’m in Vietnam at the moment and tried it again this morning. When I double click the side button, Apple Pay opens up. I select my relevant card and at that time it has a notification saying “hold card near reader” or something like that. When I do, The terminal does not even recognise the phone..so there is no error message. It doesn’t pick the phone up at all. This consistently happens. My wife then paid the bill using her Apple Pay and the same card, so clearly not a terminal problem. So most of the time the terminal doesn’t recognise the phone, or if it does, it errors out. I’ll keep trying it and see if I get to the point of error message and report back.

Unfortunately I did this. I don’t use a vpn so I did what you said and reset the network settings. I also deleted the cards and added them again to the phone. I did this twice. Firstly reset the settings, then deleted and re added the cards, and when that didn’t work, I again deleted the cards, reset network settings and then added the cards again. Still when I hold the phone to the card reader it doesn’t pick up the phone. The cards all add ok, it’s just that the terminals will not connect with the phone.

Hi Jeff. Yes I’ve tried with and without the case. When I double click the iPhone button to initiate Apple Pay and enter the app with Face ID, the “hold near reader” instruction is there ready to go. On various terminals I have used with and without the case and moved the phone around the terminal for 30 seconds or so and still nothing. At that point I just use my Apple Watch to pay which works fine.
