This began earlier this week. I did not change any settings or do any out of the ordinary tasks. Right now the only apps that won't open with a normal mouse click are Finder, Mail and Adobe Acrobat. How can I fix this?

Try booting into Safe Mode then restart normally. Sometimes that will fix anomalies.
Thanks very much. I couldn't get the computer into safe mode. I followed the instructions three times. I finally decided to delete the Acrobat DC app and reinstall it so acrobat is now working. Finder is working. Mail is still asking me to open a new viewer window. So maybe it's something in settings that I can't figure out?

If you are using a wireless keyboard, try plugging in the keyboard, then try again.
