Can I use an USB 3 Hard Drive with my older iMac?

My imac is around 6 years old, it has regular usb ports, I just got an external hard drive which has a usb 3 cable,, is there an adaptor I can get so I.can use the hard drive

I know you have a reply already, but does your USB 3 cable have USB-C type connectors at both ends, or other type of connector?

I am assuming your iMac is somewhere between 2017 and 2020 which has USB ports and Thunderbolt ports.


Are you trying to connect at the back of your iMac to the USB ports or the Thunderbolt ports?


If you do have the USB-C to USB-C cable, then have you tried to connect to the Thunderbolt inputs which are USB-C type connectors?
