macOS - Finder shows unrelated items for a search query.

Hi all,

Why does Finder show unrelated items for a distinct search query?

If I type in "Summers Day" when I'm trying to find a file I see a list of all kinds of completely unrelated things.

Is there a way to make it so Finder only shows results for the key words you are typing only in the file name?

Cheers.

When you type in the search field, it asks you if you want to limit the search to a variety of categories including Filenames:

You can also start with "Find by Name" using cmd-shift-ctrl-F

Kind of long shortcut, but you can change it.

Just entering a string such as "Summers Day" causes Spotlight to check every Search Result category that you have selected in System Settings > Spotlight. This doesn't just look for a document name but peeks inside documents to see if it can match that search string, or does web lookups, and is woefully inefficient.

Apple talks about narrowing your Spotlight search results by using keywords to limit the search to just filenames. For instance, this case-insensitive search for a document whose name contains the partial or full string:

kind:pdf name:summer
kind:word name:"summers day"
kind:pages name:" day"

In concert with Spotlight search, it is beneficial to make a change to the Finder Settings > Advanced panel:

for when you are using the search feature in a Finder Window.

I've just realised another thing that might have gotten me a bit lost. If I use Spotlight to search there's no option to select the things mentioned above. Can Spotlight search be set to a defaul search type ?

No. But, in the spotlight settings, you can select the categories of items that it returns. Unless you add the search tokens to the spotlight window, you cannot prevent Spotlight from searching on content. If you want to do a file name search, do it in the Finder.
