I just initialized a new raid 1/mirrored 8t drive for time machine. APFS volume, no partions. Sys settings>control center>Time Machine is set to "Show in menu bar".
I want to back up my MBP M2 500g.
Sys settings sees the new backup disk, I can click it. Finder window sees the disk and has the time machine icon next to it. The menu bar is not showing it so obviously I cant start time machine.
What am I missing?

The cable should be fine. You can backup without the menu bar icon by going to System Settings > General > Time Machine and right clicking on your Time Machine drive.
one thing ive noticed, dont know if it matters, is that on the sidebar in finder window, the TM icon is not consistently showing up next to the name of the drive. When i unmount and then re-mount it does show....
Do you have the same issues when in Safe Mode?
edit; no partitions or volumes.
Try restarting. Try toggling "Show in menu bar".

Same issues when in safe Mode.... and im still running 14.5 I wanted to backup BEFORE updating OS....
im not using an apple thunderbolt cable, but it is from OWC, that should be OK?
