Terminal Freezing Issue on macOS 15.2 (MacBook Pro 14-inch, M4 Pro)

I'm experiencing a recurring issue with the Terminal app on my 14-inch MacBook Pro. Here are the details:

  • MacBook Pro: 14-inch
  • Chip: Apple M4 Pro
  • macOS Version: 15.2 (24C101)
  • Issue: The Terminal app occasionally freezes completely when I click the "Shell" button in the top menu bar. I typically use this button to open a new tab within the Terminal window.
  • Frequency: This freeze happens almost daily, but not every time I click the "Shell" button.
  • Impact: When the freeze occurs, the entire Terminal application becomes unresponsive. I cannot type any commands, close the window, or use any menu options.
  • Workaround: The only way to resolve the issue is to use Force Quit to close the Terminal application.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone else encountered this problem on macOS 15.2, especially with an M4 Pro MacBook Pro?
  2. Are there any known workarounds or solutions for this issue besides Force Quit?
  3. Could this be a bug in macOS 15.2, and if so, is there a way to report it to Apple?

Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Regards

Cem

I have an M1 max running Sequoia 15.3.1, same issue.

Apple is not here on this forum, we are just other regular users such as yourself.

I've already provided you with your options in my earlier post. It is very easy to work around the issue, just make sure to release the mouse/trackpad click only after selecting an item other than another sub menu.

I provided a link for you to report it to Apple...maybe if enough people do so Apple will fix it (doubtful since it is a minor bug causing minor inconvenience...there are bigger things Apple has declined to address anyway). Another option is to use something other than macOS or Apple products.

I have seen this issue on M1 MBAirs running macOS 14.x Sonoma when I click the Terminal's "Shell" menu on the menubar, but only select "New Window" or "New Tab" without following the sub-menu to select the exact version of that new Window/Tab. It is annoying. So far I have only noticed this issue with macOS 14.x Sonoma on M-series Macs.

The work around is to actually select the exact type of new Window/Tab in the sub-menu. When I do that, I have never had a problem. I'm not always nimble with the Trackpad, so I sometimes end up selecting just "New Window" instead of "New Window --> New Window With Profile - Basic" even though that is the default if you only select "New Window -->". Or you can use the shortcut keys such as Command + N or whatever shortcut key is designated for your menu selection.

You can provide Apple with product feedback here (Apple won't respond):
