"Location Expired" and location sharing in iMessage not working

For months my family member has been unable to see my location in iMessage, even though I had verified through all of my settings that it should be working. Whenever they use the "request location" feature and I would respond with my location, they would immediately get a "location expired" message instead. What can be done to fix this?

This was happening because the email address associated with my iCloud account was not associated with my Contact entry in the family member's phone. Once we added my iCloud email as an email on my Contact entry everything began working.
