Final cut running sluggish with constant beachballs

Final Cut performance is really poor for me. Simple things like changing text or even pressing play are causing it to hang for 10 seconds with the infamous beachball.

I recently updated the OS from Senoma to Sequoia as well as updated Final Cut for the first time since June and suddenly i'm having these slowdowns that weren't present before. I'm using a fresh library to edit a 3 hour pantomime and while i've got several angles, there isn't any overly complicated effects. When I edited a similar project in June there wasn't an issue.

I tried deleting all google apps and its their various keystones after reading a lot of users found it caused the exact issues I was having, however it's made no difference.

Is there something else I should be trying? I read that possibly migrating my M2 from my old intel mac could be the cause, however that was in early 2023 when I migrated and as said, it's only now the issue has started.

Background rendering is off and I generally close all other programs whilst editing. I'm editing and taking files straight from the internal SSD, no proxy or optimised footage.

Running M2 Pro with 16gb ram & 2TB ssd (250gb free)

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 15.1

The system drive is essentially full (only about 10% of free space). When the drives get full, performance can seriously degrade. System drives should be kept with at least 15-20% free.

You have system security disabled, which is always a bad idea.

You have VirtualBox 6.1.40, which does not offer support for Apple Silicon macs.

You have a number of very old extensions that were probably installed many years ago.

There is a lot of cruft in there that you probably don't even remember installing - some using the 10.7 (Lion) SDK...

And, even though they seem to not be loaded, you have remnants of the nasty "cleanmymac"... :-(

This should NEVER be allowed on any mac, let alone one used for professional applications like FCP.

Here is what I recommend you do:

1) Make sure to have a full backup

2) Erase all Content and Settings (this does not erase the OS itself, which is mounted in a sealed volume)

3) Migrate from the backup but ONLY the user accounts and nothing else

4) Install FCP and test

5) Install any applications that you really use.

This will probably showing you what you've been missing: a faster performant mac like it is supposed to be.
