Can an iPad have two Apple IDs

We have two iPads : both show Apple ID as mine. The first (my wife's) has iMessage ON using her Apple ID.

When I transferred apps and data etc directly from my "wife's" iPad to my new iPad, her messages are now showing up with mine.

I don't really need this crossover , how do I remove this inter iPad communication. The phone numbers are different between iPads. I have Messages turned off on both machines in iCloud.

Ideas?

I am not completely clear as to how many accounts are involved and if your wife is using your account but signed into Messages with her account, or what?

One has never been able to transfer apps device to device. For the past 6 or so years you have only been able to redownload them from the store. So I infer from your comment you are using a single Apple Account on both devices. You should each have your own Apple Account. Using a single account means iCloud is trying its best to make sure both devices have identical content.
