Trackpad not working after liquid spill on my MacBook Air

After liquid was spilled on my laptop, the trackpad stopped working. However, after a software update a while ago, it started working again, but after some time it stopped working once more. How can I fix this problem without spending money?

You probably can't. It's most likely a hardware failure that took a while to become complete as the liquid seeped further into the circuitry and perhaps caused corrosion other otherwise shorted things out. Assuming a restart doesn't bring the trackpad back into operation, take your Mac to an Apple Store or authorized Apple service center and have your system evaluated. If you have AppleCare+ on your Mac, most of the cost of the repair would be covered, but there will still be a charge (sort of a co-pay) involved. Otherwise you'll have to resort to using an external mouse.

Regards.
