Updating from El Capitain

Hi, I wish to update from OS 10.11.6 to the next available version, is it possible and will I loose all data?

Definitely back up your Mac before updating. El Capitan is the original OS for that model and you can update all teh way up to Monterey - quite a jump.


Also, El Capitan uses the HFS+ file system and after High Sierra the file system switched to APFS, so you might want to stage multiple updates to minimize the risk of multiple major changes going wrong. I'd probably go El Capitan to High Sierra or Catalina, then go to Monterey from Catalina.

Note that if you upgrade to Catalina or later,

  • 32-bit applications will stop working
  • iTunes will go away, replaced by separate applications (Music, TV, Podcasts, Books) and the Finder


If you upgrade to Monterey, you won't have the latest version of Safari – but you will have a fairly recent one, and it will also be possible to run current versions of third-party browsers (e.g., Firefox).
