Open the Terminal on command-R recovery.

Type:

system_profiler SPHardwareDataType

Mojave will only install on:

  • MacBook (Early 2015 or newer) [model identifier 8,1 or later]
  • MacBook Air (Mid 2012 or newer) [model identifier 5,1 or later]
  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 or newer) [model identifier 9,1 or later]
  • Mac mini (Late 2012 or newer) [model identifier 6,1 or later]
  • iMac (Late 2012 or newer) [model identifier 12,1 or later]
  • Mac Pro (Late 2013; Mid 2010 and Mid 2012 models with recommended Metal-capable graphics cards) [model identifier 5,1 or later]

October 7, 2019 Macs and later can't install Mojave.

MacBooks have an EMC# sometimes on their base label which can help identify the age of the computer. A magnifying glass or zoom feature of your cell phone's camera may be needed to read it.

If you can read the serial number, use Apple's Checkcoverage page to check the age. The serial number should NOT be posted on the Apple Support Communities as this may be your key to warranty and other personal information.
