The VIP screen was stuck on my phone. The answers provided didn’t help. I tried editing the home screen and deleting the mail app. Then I added the email app back on the screen. That worked.

I suggest you to do a reset to factory settings: press & release vol +, press & release vol - , press & hold power until you see the apple logo.
Then there will be a laptop image and a cable, connect your iPhone to a laptop, with a mac use finder and find the phone, an iTunes tab should open and you will be able to find a restore option, click on it and yoyr phone will be restored.
Put your iCloud account on the phone and everything should be normal!
If you can't reset the phone it means its "kaput"
1. What you are describing is a forced restart, it does not reset to factory settings
2. They already fixed the problem, why are you suggesting all these unnecessary steps?
