macbook wallpaper turned black

I'm using the latest version of MacOS on my macbook.

I've been using one of the builtin wallpapers but after a restart, the wallpaper turned black.

  • Booting in safe mode did not help
  • can change to other builtin wallpapers
  • can change to the dark mode version of the wallpaper, only light mode appears as black
  • i have a second user with the same wallpaper, it still works for them

Any ideas how to fix this?
