The USB port on some models Apple TV box is for connecting to a computer to re-install the system software that way, when the unit won’t work loading the existing software anymore.

It is not about booting from USB.

… to use apple tv 1.

The original Apple TV (1st generation) [A1218] (2007), the big white one, has had its last software update (v3.0.2) in 2010, and has been obsolete since about 2018, when the remaining functionality was essentially cut off (connecting to the iTunes Store no longer possible, interfacing through iTunes requires pre-2017 version).

If you want to do anything with that model in 2024, then you’re pretty much on your own.

Apple considers it a joke to use apple tv 1. Local store won’t fix it. All the youtube videos are useless for installing any kind of bootable system on apple tv. Apple’s own restore dmg doesn’t work and it can’t be opened or a disk image made of it because osx is using it. Osmc files don’t work. Apple pi installer files don’t work. Nobody knows anything about how to fix this ****** thing which is why I don’t buy new apple products anymore because they’ll just end up as useless garbage nobody can fix.

Where does it say in the dmg zip file which can’t be opened that a computer needs to be hooked up to apple tv to restore it?

At this point, considering all the wasted hours I’ve spent with no one having any actual ideal of how to boot an apple tv off a usb to verify its just the hard drive that’s gone, and after all the wrong unworkable solutions offered on youtube, its time to junk it and just stop buying any new apple products.

So many people think they know what they’re talking about when in fact none of the solutions offered on youtube ever actually works.
