Personal Voice not playing on M4 MacBook Pro and iPhone 16

I have just recently upgraded to a M4 MacBook Pro and iPhone 16. I went through the process of setting up my personal voice. On both devices when I go to play a selected text the voice is not using my Personal Voice? If I go into the Personal Voice in settings it does then play my voice, but it does not play my voice when I select text and then select Start Speaking. It is the same on my iPhone 16 and on my M4 MacBook Pro. Am I misunderstanding something?

Wondering just where (eg: in which apps) Personal Voice is not working automatically for you:

Create a Personal Voice on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac - Apple Support

says:

"Use your Personal Voice to type to speak

  • in FaceTime and phone calls,
  • assistive communication apps,
  • and in-person conversations".

Article also says: "Personal Voice can be used only with Live Speech and third-party apps that you allow, such as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) apps.

You can control app access to Personal Voice in Settings (or System Settings) > Accessibility > Personal Voice.

Additionally, the third-party apps that you grant access can't capture speech from Personal Voice."

Then: Use Live Speech on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch - Apple Support

Eg says:

"Before you can use Live Speech, you’ll need to turn it on.

On your iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Settings app. Tap Accessibility, then tap Live Speech.
  2. Turn Live Speech on or off.

On your Mac

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click Accessibility in the sidebar, then click Live Speech.
  2. Turn Live Speech on or off."
