What is the gray rectangle on my iPad screen?

Recently a new detail has been appearing on the top right side of my iPad screen when I open the iPad. It’s a gray rectangle with four circles in it and what looks like an iPhone or iPad icon on the far left. Normally there are photos in that square. Wondering what that is.
