Cannot Get Mail - Network Error (POSIX 61)

Cannot Get Mail

The connection to the server failed.

Network error (POSIX 61).

Also, at the bottom of the screen, it says: "Updated Just Now - Account Error: iCloud. Details...

("Details" is a link that pops up the error message above)

For the past few days, I am getting this error when checking Mail on my iPhone's Mail App. I do not believe I made any changes to my network or my settings. Only a handful of results populate when I search online. One example (https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/1hdej73/email_posix_61_error/) describes a similar issue with Gmail, but I am using my iCloud email account (also, if it matters, I do not use gmail at all).

That thread also includes a couple of suggestions that did not work for me:

(1) Turning off VPN. My iphone is managed by my company which includes a VPN I cannot disable. But this VPN has been active since installed nearly 2 years ago, whereas I've never seen this error before the past week or so.

(2) Disconnect and reconnect. I went through the whole process of signing out of my Apple account on my iphone, and signing back in again. This did not solve the error.

I should note that my iphone will eventually succeed in checking mail, but it can take seconds, minutes, or hours.

In case it matters, my iOS is 18.1.1.

iPhone 11, iOS 18

I have had this problem since coming to Florida for winters beginning 2 years ago. I have never had VPN enabled. I am with Bell Canada mail. When on a PW protected WiFi I get the POSIX 61 error and need to shut WiFi to get email. When on a public network I don’t need to shut wifi and all works. When I return to Canada the error disappears. I do not get the error with Hotmail in Florida. Only the Bell mail accounts.

This happened well before IOS 18.2. I wish there were a solution.

It is strange that I am receiving incoming mail (but yet it gives me that error message that I am NOT connected to the imap incoming server) and it only populates some of my folders and when it does, it takes a long time...runs very slow. Also, when I make changes on the iPhone, it does NOT sync up with the ISP mail server. My MS computer's Outlook mail is running fine...which tells me that the Mediacom setting I am using for the iPhone are correct.

I didn’t have the VPN on but it makes no difference if it is on or off. I also shut off the wifi on the phone to force it to use the Verizon network but I still can’t send email. One of the many people I’ve talked to at Mediacom ended up being a Tier 3 rep. He said Apple does not like Mediacom’s Zimbra servers and therefore does not provide any updates to their stock mail app to work with Mediacom so it eventually quits working with Mediacom. Seems that’s where I am at now. I’m in the process of forwarding all my email from my Mediacom account to a gmail account so I can reply to my customers and that works just fine using the stock Apple mail app. So it is an Apple issue as Apple doesn’t want to make sure it works with all ISP providers. Typical of Apple. They just don’t care if they play well with EVERYBODY!

My mail has not been working correctly for months. I keep getting the error POSIX61. My server Mediacom says it’s an apple issue. I did call Apple a couple of months ago and they started a case for me, but I don’t have that number. Basically the only way I can get my email from Mediacom is to go on the website to read it.
