I'm buying a watch for my wife. Which is superior: series 10 or series OS11?

os11 is not a watch. It is software and comes installed on the Series 10.

Your Apple Watch choices are

  • Apple Watch Series 10 ($500 U.S. w/cellular radio)
  • Apple Watch SE (fewest features; $300 U.S. w/cellular radio)
  • Apple Watch Ultra II ($800 U.S.)

The SE and Series 10 can be obtained for less in the GPS Only models, where you need the paired iPhone nearby for Internet connections and phone calls when away from home.

Unless your wife is an outdoor adventurer, marathon runner, frequent scuba diver, etc…, the Ultra II is overkill, and a clunky watch on a woman’s wrist.

The SE has fewer health monitoring features, so in my mind it is better suited for children, as many of the health features are disabled for anyone under the age of 22 anyway.

So my suggestion is the Series 10, most likely the 42mm screen size as most women have smaller wrists (your mileage may vary).

And DO NOT get the Ultra II for the longer battery life, unless your wife is an outdoor adventurer, marathon runner, frequent scuba diver, etc…, as you should charge the Apple Watch EVERY day. Otherwise, you will forget, run the battery too low, too often, and wear out the battery causing disappointment, and extra expense.

The Apple Watch Ultra will also remind you, if it needs to be charged, and Apple does not mention, that you should charge your watch daily. Running it completely empty is the thing that will damage your battery.

The problem with waiting until told to recharge, is if you are out and about, it could be hours before you get back to your charger.

A daily habit of charging is easier to establish, than every other day, or every 3rd day, or worrying about getting to a charger when notified battery is low.

Save the extended time away from the charger for when you are hiking, on a sailboat for an overnight cruse, running that marathon or ultra marathon, etc…. And for daily life, charge it everyday.
