Excessive storage usage by Messages app on iPhone

I keep getting the iPhone storage full message, and the main apps taking up the storage is Photos (but I can delete those easily) and Messages. When I go to the IPhone storage tab in Settings, then click on Messages, here is what I see:

It’s not adding up- literally. Can anyone enlighten me on what I can do to fix this?
