My IPod doesn't charge from mains or laptop, only when connected to a player device with charging function. Battery is also obviously dead because it lasts for 3 minutes only away from the charger. Never really been an issue before because I only play it from the charger but now want to transfer 3000 music files to an external storage device and/or laptop

It's not clear what you wish to achieve, but for now I'll assume that you want to copy the music on the iPod to somewhere else.
There is no easy way to do this, iTunes does not have that ability. If the music is not already on your computer and listed by iTunes, the only thing now is to use a third-party app to recover the music from the iPod. Have a read of this article from fellow user turingtest2: Recover your iTunes library from your iPo… - Apple Community, which lists software that can do that. Some of that software is free, some has limited free options and some you will need to pay for.
