Does Image Capture download originals or optimised version?

Hi everyone

I have icloud optimised photos switched on and so assume icloud has the original files and iphone has the optimised version. I would now like to do a backup to a separate hard disk to ensure all the original files are kept locally. If I use image capture to access my iphone, will image capture download the originals from icloud during the backup process or I will only be able to download the optimised version? How can I tell if what I have downloaded is optimised or original?

Some suggest to be safe to download from icloud to my hard disk to ensure the files are original but icloud.com limits 1000 files as the upper cap each time and I have over 30,000 files to download so this isn't efficient for me

Many thanks for helping

I just played with Image Capture a bit, and it seems that IC only lists picture files that are complete. On my iPad, which doesn't use "Optimize" I had about 27000 pictures listed. But on my iPhone, which does use "Optimize," IC listed only about 2700 pictures. On my phone, I chose a picture that wasn't listed by IC, hit Edit on the phone to force a download, and I then saw that this picture became listed by Image Capture.

This appears not to be a way to back up images from an "Optimized" iPhone.

For reference, I use iCloud to synchronize my iPhone and iPad with my Mac, and I backup my Mac.
