New iphone 15 won't accept my apple id password

I'm in the process of setting up my new iphone (not a previously used iphone) and have successfully transferred most of the data, however when the notice for me to enter the password for my Apple id comes up, and I carefully input my password, I get the message that Verification failed; Apple id or password is incorrect." I tried several times to get it to accept my password, but no dice.

I went so far as to change my apple id password and use the new one in the sign in screen, yet it still doesn't work on the new phone. Any other ideas? Thanks.
