Updating my iPad system has killed it once again. What can I do to fix it?

I was in the Apple Devices App to synchronize the MP3s I have on my iPad, and I noticed that there was an update available.  I believe it was iPadOS 18.2.

The last two times I tried to install an update, the update failed part way through the process and could not be reversed.  The first time this happened I went to the Apple Store to put my iPad back to factory condition and then went through the process of loading my last backup.   The second time, I found some obscure internet page that guided me to getting the iPad running again, but I can’t find that web page again. (It wasn’t an Apple page) With that in mind this time, I reluctantly pressed the button in the Devices App to Update my system.  And, of course, the update failed just like the last two updates.

The failure occurs after the update reboots the iPad (I assume after updating the firmware) and the progress bar on the iPad is about at the halfway point.  At that point, the Devices App pops up a message that there is a problem that prevents the update from completing.

I have manually rebooted the iPad, restarted my Windows laptop, killed and reloaded the Apple Devices app.  The computer and the Devices App recognize that the iPad is connected, but neither the ”Update” nor the “Restore” button in the Devices app do anything except visually show that they are pressed.

So currently, my iPad is an expensive paperweight.

The details are:

iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd Generation) Wi-Fi Cellular 512GB Silver

Model: A2068  (MXF02LL/A)

Apple Devices App is version 1.5.2.58 (1.1282.14849.0)

Apple Mobile Device system is  1759.40.2.0.0 (18.0.0.33)

Apple Mobile Device Driver is 538.0.0.0

My last comment is that I have had three iPads, and the iTunes app never had a problem updating any of them. Also, The Apple Devices App for Windows doesn't allow saving a playlist to, or loading one from, a text type file like XML or CSV like iTunes was able to do.

iPad Pro, iPadOS 18

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings using a computer - Apple Support has the steps you need for recovering your iPad.

With regard to the update, how full is your iPad's storage? I tried to update an iPad recently but it failed because there was insufficient space and I had to use the steps in the linked document above to get it going again.

My problem is fixed. This is the last comment.

I took my iPad to the Apple Store. They connected it to a Mac laptop, downloaded the latest IOS update, pushed it into my device using the Mac version of Apple Devices, and budda-bee budda-bum, the iPad is working with the latest update.

Nothing wrong with my iPad. I believe it is Apple's bad "Apple Devices App" for Windows. They must have assigned interns to make a Windows version from the Mac app.

I am quite annoyed that the Windows version doesn't allow the user to save or load a playlist as an XML, CSV or TXT file that was part of the iTunes features. iTunes had everything you need in one place, although splitting the device management from media playing is not an inconvenience for me.

But for now until the next version update, I am again happily enjoying my good old iPad.

Thanks for all of you who tried to help. The End.

Hi JustZoot

The Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings using a computer page is current, and was updated only a couple of months ago. iTunes is still available for download for Windows systems up to and including Windows 10. I don't use Windows so the other system requirements mean nothing to me. I have read in this forum that if you have Apple Devices installed iTunes can be used only to access podcasts and audiobooks, but if you delete Apple Devices iTunes has its functions returned.

You would seem to have adequate storage on your iPad to avoid problems.

The Restrore iPad option is the one you want. As you have reported that it isn't working for you I would suggest that you contact Apple Support, the link for which is at the foot of the page in the Restore Your iPhone...link.

First, the page you linked to seems to be out of date. The first numbered paragraph refers to using iTunes, which Apple forced me to stop using and start using the Apple Devices App.

Now, when I connect the iPad with the Apple Devices App running, the iPad shows up on the connected devices list on the left of screen, but an info box immediately pops up advising that there is a problem and providing three buttons: "Update", "Restore" and "Cancel". Pressing either Update or Restore makes the info box go away and the main part of the Devices App screen says:

iPad Recovery Mode

If you are experiencing problems with this iPad, you can restore its original settings by

clicking Restore iPad.

and these two buttons

"Check for Update" "Restore iPad..."

The Check for Update button is inactive, and the Restore iPad... button depresses when clicked but does nothing.

In response to your question about storage, I have 512GB and I was using about one-fourth of that before I tried to update my IOS.
