It's part of Apple's plan to kill CAPTCHAs with Private Access Tokens.

I ran one of those "challenge" keys through a base64 decoder and came up with "dap.pat-issuer.cloudflare.comdap-leader-apple-01"

Turns out, the PAT folders of my Apple Silicon Macs are empty, but the one on the iMac Pro does have the "dap…" files. Intel vs Silicon? Still don't know what they are but since at least three different Macs have them, they're most likely created by the System, not a third-party app.

Why? It is a feature that removes the requirement to play stupid games to get into a site. When the CAPTCHA pops up, I close the tab and move on with my life. Seems like a great solution.

There are hundreds of such hidden features in the operating system. There are only a handful that you can disable.
