iBooks book with 4000+ pages taking a long time to show highlight menu.

I have several books in iBooks and they work great. I also have the ESV bible (4000+ pages) and it takes a long time (5 or more seconds) to show the highlight/notes menu when double tapping a word on certain pages and I cannot figure out why. The pages are in the 800s and some have highlight and some don't. I tried moving to different pages of the book higher and lower in page number and it works as expected. SO FRUSTRATING!

*I've tried the following:*
I searched the word "the" in the book to see if by continuing to run through the first 1000 pages of the search it would maybe index the book, but that made no change.

I did a soft reset on the iPad by holding down the power and home button until seeing the Apple logo.

I also told iTunes to not sync the book, then added it back again later. No change.

PLEASE ADVISE and thanks in advance for the help.
+Note the version of OS on the iPad is 3.2.2 (it wasn't an option in the drop down below)+

iPad 64GB Wireless, iPhone OS 3.1.3

HI,

Try turning off some settings such as Location Services, Battery Percentage, AutoLock, Bluetooth. iPod Controls.

See if that makes a difference.

I think you've answered your own question. A file that big is going to take a while to load. I've seen (for other platforms) versions of the bible that are broken up into different volumes to minimize this sort of problem.

I would agree except that the load time is no different than any of the other smaller books and the lag for the menu only happens around page 850 or so. Pages in the 100s, 1000s and even 4000s work as fast as the 182 page winnie the pooh book.

I would just remove the book and re-download it except that I have no guarantee that is going to work and the book was originally free in the iBooks store and is now $19.99, so I'm not about to spend $20 on something that is not guaranteed to fix the problem.

FIX (not really)

I figured out the problem. Evidently I had TOO MUCH highlighting in that particular book of the bible. I went through and manually deleted all of the highlighted items from that book and it is working as expected.

DEAR APPLE, please fix the fact that lots of highlighting in a particular section of a book in iBooks slows down the pop up menu from showing to an unacceptable crawl.

I just submitted the feedback form as well. I tagged it as a bug since for those of us who use highlighting and notes this app quickly becomes unusable. It is a great app though and I hope this will be fixed ASAP so I can begin using it again.

I just discovered the slowing of the ibooks app with highlighting today. I called Apple support and they stated that they have not heard of it before. I am glad that I searched the web and found this forum. I just submitted this buy go Apple also. I am a student and depend on this app (and the kindle, but prefer ibooks) for studying and highlighting is a must!

I've registered here just to report that I do a lot of highlighting and experience exactly the same issue. My iPad 3 can handle demanding games but an ebook is too much for it? I really like iBooks, but the slowness takes all the pleasure of reading away

The sad thing is that this forum is over two years old now, but the problem still hasn't been resolved. I don't think undoing all my highlighting is an acceptable (or fair) solution. I submitted a "bug report" today. I hope an upcoming update of the iBooks app will fix this issue.

In the meantime, thanks for posting the "tip" on how to put the pep back in the app.

Darn. I am doing a study in a book that is 550 or 1056 pages long depending on portrait or landscape orientation and have barely started and it is Soooo slow. Am highlighting and adding notes.

Another problem or feature is that my notes show up in the order I added the note, so if I go back and add a note on pg 50 but am reading on page 120 the notes views has the p50 note after the notes from p 120. It would be nice to be able to sort by date added or by location in book.

I wish I had done the Kindle edition!

I turned off all of these and it did not change anything. I even tried doing another soft reset with them off as well.

No change.

Thanks for the finding. It happened to me also. I had to delete all of my highlights so that iBook 2 is more responsive on turning pages on my iPhone 4. I had submitted my complaint.
