JVT/AVC Coding Codec Videos Don't Play On Older Quicktime

We're running in an environment that requires QT 7.3 and Tiger OS. But we keep getting videos from people with this JVT/AVC Coding Codec, and they don't play - don't even open in Quicktime. We have to open them on a system with a newer Quicktime and reconvert them before we can view them on the QT 7.3 systems...

What is this new codec and why is it not backwards compatible? Is there a place to get the codec for older systems?

Does it make commercial sense to hang on to an operating system that is two generations old?

That seems to answer my question!

What is this new codec

Not that new - it's from 2003!

More information here:

And as for the future:

Apple-supported H.264 standard for HTML5 video on the web:

If it's old - from 2003, why has it just started surfacing in the last couple months. I've seen just about every codec come through here and am baffled where this "JVT/AVC Coding" is coming from. Would it be a specific program that is saving the h.264 in this way?

I get that this is an H.264 codec - at least that's what I'm reading into your reply... just wondering where this specific codec is from and if there is a way/application that can read it on Tiger...
