how do you create a new itunes media folder?

In the process of recovering a back up, i have somehow managed to set up my Music collection on Music without having a proper 'itunes media' folder, with a music folder, album artwork folder, itl. file etc. (despite me copy and pasting the whole thing over!

It's causing a few issues:

Music keeps moving all my files in the 'music' folder into another 'music' folder its created so my filepaths now read file:///Volumes/T9/Itunes/iTunes Media/Music/Music/Music/The Streets/Original Pirate Material/1-01 Turn The Page.mp3 - which is causing all sorts of issues. namely that rekordbox then cant find the files anymore.

Music is also keeping the main Music Library.xml file in my dropbox folder of all places, and wont let me move that anywhere else.

how can i get it to create a completely fresh itunes media folder so everything is working properly? I assume it's the 'reset' button under settings, files, but terrified to press that!

big thanks to turingtest2 who seems to be the only person who knows about all this stuff - have found so many of their replies helpful!

Thanks

Hi,

See Managing your Mac media libraries - Apple Community for some background. Your media folder can be wherever you choose for it to be, but I would suggest using something like <VolumeName>/Music/Media as the media folder, and storing the .musiclibrary package in <VolumeName>/Music. You can then either consolidate the library to this new path if there is room on the drive and do a manual clean up later, or trust in the Mac's ability to work out what you've done if you manually move folders from deep inside the rabbit hole up and over to the new media folder.

See the iTunes Media Organization section of the tip for an explanation of the nested Music folders. By default iTunes adds an additional Music folder inside the selected media folder as part of the path before it gets to the artist folders. This was good in iTunes when it was dealing with multiple types of media, not so good for Music that only deals with Music, and not so good if you tell the app to use this nested Music folder as the media folder, and it then goes and creates another nested layer inside it! After selecting a new media folder check the .Media Preferences.plist file inside it and edit if necessary before consolidating or moving any content so you don't get an additional nested Music folder you don't want or need.

Unlike iTunes, Music won't automatically keep an XML version of the library updated. You need to export it manually each time you make changes you want other software to be aware of. You should be able to save that file in any location where you have write access. With Music the old Album Artwork folder, .itl files, and other stuff become redundant, but that is all covered in the user tip.
