No Faces Found in Photos on M3 Macbook Pro with macOS 14.7.2

Using Photos 9.0 on M3 Macbook Pro with OS 14.7.2

No faces are EVER found in any new pictures, even after hours of Photos idle in the background.

I've tried all the Community suggestions to no avail. Seems to me like a bug, and a show-stopper for me.

I will install OS 15 if I absolutely have to and if that will solve the problem.

Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure if you asked a question.

A "bug" would be something in the OS that affects everyone who uses it, and I've never had this problem with face IDs in either Sonoma or the new Sequoia. I'm not sure, without a list, what " all the Community suggestions " could be. Certainly, try these:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes, and it often helps. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

Those are the easiest things to try first. Then try these:

  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new Library by closing Photos and then option-clicking on the Photos icon.
  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it
  • Rebuild your Photos Library--close Photos and re-launch by option-command-clicking the app icon.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.

Be sure you have a solid backup of your system, including your Photos Library, on an external hard drive before updating your OS. Good Luck…

Hmmph. I just booted in safe mode and opened Photos. Same problem. Even tried importing a couple new photos with very clear faces, waited, let Photos sit in the background, restarted, etc. Still nothing!!

By contrast, running the same Photos tests on my old Macbook Pro Intel running OS 10.13 the features works great. Faces are immediately found on imported pictures. In fact, they're identified just as quickly as I can open them.

Yes, library is in Pictures folder, however "Use as System Photo LIbrary," I suppose because it's the only library.

However.. **last night Photos found faces in my 300 photo library for the first time !!

I wasn't doing anything different that I know of. So I know it DOES WORK. We'll see what happens now, going forward, as I import a whole slew of new pictures. I wonder if some combination of the M3 processors, OS, and updated app have relegated the background process that does the magic to a much lower priority?

Ok, thanks for the response. I've tried all the above except safe mode startup. Even some suggestions including forcing a restart of the photoanalyzer background process and prohibiting Spotlight from accessing the data base.

Guess I've hesitated in the safe mode test since my computer is new with nothing on it except what it came with from the Apple store. And I don't want to have to start in safe mode to use Photos. Nevertheless, I suppose it's worth a try.
