Siri used to just ping

I recently upgraded from iPhone 8plus to SE. On my old phone, Siri would make a sort of ping sound when replying to “hey, Siri.” Now, she goes, “uh huh.”

I have tried changing Siri settings to no response, to automatic and to voice response. None of these made any difference. I tried looking through “Sound & Haptics” settings, but Siri isn’t in there either.

Is this an iOS bug? Or is this a new feature designed to discourage us from using Siri?

FWIW, on my iPhone SE 2nd gen / iOS 17.7.2, if I say "Hey Siri" the glowy "palantir" ball appears, a message box with "Hey Siri >" appears, and I get a single haptic tick.

Settings>Accessibility>Siri has "Prefer Spoken Responses" selected, but if I don't ask for anything after "Hey Siri" it doesn't say anything.

What is this thing officially called, anyway?

Icons like this are often given an official name, like the "spinning wait cursor" for the Spinning Beachball of Death.
