MacBook Pro is not accepting correct password

The opening screen of my new 2024 MacBook is not accepting my correct password, so I can’t get into my computer. I’ve enabled Touch ID and have used both it and the password before with no problems. For some reason, I’m asked to enter only the password and have done so numerous times to no avail. What can I do to log on?

psswds are case sensitive...

There are instances where Touch ID will not be accepted by macOS:

• If you restarted your Mac, or if you're not logged into your user account.

• If you have not unlocked your Mac for 48 hours.

• If you are trying to unlock Security & Privacy

• If you are trying to unlock Users & Groups Settings (when FileVault is on)

• If 5 wrong fingerprint attempts

Some common issues that can cause a seemingly correct password entry to fail are:

  1. Reboot (seriously, rebooting first is a tried-and-true technical solution to many oddball issues)
  2. Is the caps-lock key accidentally turned on?
  3. If using a 3-party keyboard, is the num-lock key accidentally turned on?
  4. If using a docking station or separate keyboard, does it have connectivity and are keystrokes registering
  5. Is there a stuck key on your keyboard (e.g. is the entire password box already filled with bullets "••••••" even before you enter anything)?
  6. Is a key on your keyboard not registering (i.e. a broken key)?
  7. Is your keyboard in an unusual orientation that is causing you to type on the wrong keys?

The best thing to try for several of the items above is to try connecting another keyboard via USB and entering your password. If that works, then troubleshoot some more with the built-in keyboard.
