If you would like some help, we may need some more info in order to help find a solution.

The solution could rely any one of various reasons why you have this situation.

Wondering if you are able to log-in to Messages and FaceTime with your Apple ID and password, or not.

If you can’t turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime on iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro - Apple Support

or

What have you already tried ? (Eg: Restarting your Mac (Apple Menu > Restart) may be all that's needed)

or

What happens when you try to send a message ... eg: an error message may reveal the cause of the situation.

See: If you can’t send or receive messages using Messages on Mac - Apple Support

or

Does your MacBook Air have the newest compatible MacOS version installed ... you can check via Apple menu > System Settings (or System Preferences) > General > Software Updates (NB: Back up data first if updating)

You may want to check how to: Set up Messages on Mac - Apple Support to see if anything there helps.
