They are ‘callus’ numbers that I have not put there and are not in my contact list - only show in the text message list.
Whatever I try I am unable to remove them.

They’re not in the blocked list, it’s the contacts list for sending texts.
When you swipe left it moves the number to the address bar and turns red, swiping left then removes it from the address bar but doesn’t delete it. When you open the contacts list again it’s still there.
Swipe left on the number in the blocked list and tap on Unblock.
