I am rtying to turn off auto start on my MacBook air - have typed sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00 into terminal and it is asking for password but there is no password on the laptop and so keep getting sorry, try again???? How to bypass the password

You type the password "in the blind", meaning: Terminal will not show you the password as you type it.

You might try going to System Settings… > Users & Groups and set a password for your account.
Running your Mac without a password is not advised, even if somehow you were actually able to set that up.
sudo requires the password of an account that has administrator privileges. I don't believe it's possible now to create a macOS user account without a password, and at least one user must be an administrator, so there almost certainly must be one such account and you need to use that password.

there is no password at login, i simply press return. There is no administrative password so not sure what to type in the field in terminal.
