How do I fix Mouse Highlight issues on my MacBook?

Hi! I've been having this issue since the release of Sonoma in 2023. Basically sometimes the mouse would start to appear unhighlighted when it hovers to a superlink. Also at the same time, my MX Master 3s gesture buttons would stop to work. This is a really annoying bug because it appears so frequently everyday that each time it happens I have to click on another app to stop this issue. But after a few minutes this issue would start to happen again. I have tried searching the web for a long time but there doesn't seem to be a solution. How annoying is that! I'm using a 14inch M1 MAX macbook with the latest MACOS. I believe there are a lot of people experiencing the same issue with me.

Hi, you're running into an issue I've reported multiple times and even sent my Mac in to Apple to investigate and they've ignored my pleas for help and sent it back after doing nothing. I've submitted video proof of the issue to support and gone through a whole song and dance back and forth to no avail.

Starting in Sonoma you can replicate this issue by:

  1. Right click inside an non focused app
  2. Left click inside the same window to close the context window
  3. Left click inside the same window again to focus the window

Your mouse will not respond properly to hover events and depending on the app may disallow clicking as well until you left click into a different app. This has NOTHING to do with your mouse or apps. I've tested on a fresh install and done a DFU restore as per Apple's suggestion. The problem still occurs. This also occurs with the built in touchpad.

There's a deep rooted problem in MacOS versions after Ventura and Apple refuses to do anything about it. Sorry.

I am one of those who was forced to downgrade to Ventura because of this issue. It does indeed fix it and I'm much happier like this but severely disappointed that it's been ignored for this long.

I'd advise you to complain to Apple support and feel free to reference ticket 102472832645. I've already info dumped everything about this issue and videos. We need to start making it known that it's an issue and it's unacceptable for them to just ignore it.

There's a number of people complaining in https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/16tgy8e/intermittent_mouse_click_issues_after_sonoma/ as well. Some of which have also sent their laptops in and have similar horror stories to share.

What follows may not be will received by both yourself and a lot of people you have referenced earlier

Certain misconceptions persist regarding the relationship between Apple Computer and third-party devices and accessories.

These misconceptions often arise when third-party products fail to function or meet user expectations.

Apple is responsible for addressing issues with its own services, applications, operating systems, and accessories.

However, Apple cannot rectify user choices of third-party products  installed and used on their computers.

This responsibility lies solely with the third party to evaluate the performance of their products when used on an Apple Computer running the intended version of macOS.

Hi Bluewave!

Thanks for your help! I also started noticing this problem after the release of Sonoma, which is a really buggy OS and caused my laptop to crash a couple of times in 2023.

My people told me that they can revert back to Ventura and the problem seems to be gone. I also intend to downgrade to Ventura. Hopefully this OS is more stable.

What is Apple doing with these 'Pro' laptops? They are supposed to work great with such expensive prices. If the downgrade doesn't fix this bug I'm going to switch to windows.

Hi! Thanks for the swift response! It seems connecting my mouse via a USB logitech receiver still has this issue(I've just experienced it). I have also noticed that when I connect my bluetooth headphone (third-party and airpods pro2) the sound would cut off intermittently. It got me thinking there's got to be something wrong with its bluetooth, because my headphones work very well on all my other devices.

Thanks for your response! So it seems there hasn't been a solution to this issue? I guess this is an issue caused by communication between mac and logitech mouses (Anywhere 3 also has this issue).

Unfortunately - I tend to agree
