Lost content and access in Photos app on my MacBook Pro

I can open iPhoto but have no content or access. Like it's frozen. Have tried all methods to get into the program. Nothing happening.

It would be a lot better if you gave a list, rather than saying "all methods."


For instance, have you tried closing Photos and option-clicking on the Photos icon to open the Library Chooser?

Do you have more than one Library? If so, click on them in turn to see if there's one you like.


It would be easier if you gave us some information.

  • What OS are you using? 
  • Are you using iCloud Photos to synchronize your devices?
  • Do you have “Optimize Storage” checked in Photos’ Settings
  • Where does your Photos Library reside-- in the Pictures folder of your internal drive, or on an external drive? or on a network? on iCloud drive?
  • Has this problem always existed, or did it just start? Can you think of anything that changed that might affect your device?


Have you tried these?

* re-started your Mac?

* re-started your Mac in Safe Mode?

* Checked to see if the Photos Library you are using is your System Library?

* Looked to see what's at iCloud.com?

* Checked the "syncing with iCloud" indicator on your Mac?

* If you're using an external drive for your Library, checked its formatting?

* tried a different user on your Mac?

* determined that you have more than 10% free storage on your Mac?

* determined that you have more than 10% free storage on your iCloud account?
