What -Bubba- suggested is what you need to do if you don't like the dark background. Here's the settings icon:

When you tap on that it should provide a menu, and you can click on Display:

You can choose Light or Dark, and you can have it automatically change to Dark Mode at night to save your eyes from the bright screen.

If your pictures are indeed color reversed, go to Settings and choose Accessibility:

I keep Auto-brightness on all the time so it will get dimmer at night.

I made the Horse Race image by turning on Classic Invert. Smart Invert seems to keep pictures normal but it reverses other colors. I keep both off. There are other choices that are good for people with some color blindness and other differences.

In Accessibility, I've always kept Zoom available through keyboard shortcuts, because it's easier than hunting for those store-bought reading glasses I use. You may find some other options useful.

I a 77yrs old and not part of computer generation

Well, I'm about the same-- I learned to do computers with IBM punch cards on machines that filled buildings. iPads are more powerful and way easier!

This is called 'dark mode' and it changes most light colored backgrounds to be dark/black after sunset. Some people prefer it as it can be easier on the eyes. If you want the background to stay white all the time, you can turn it off with these steps:

1. From the Home Screen where all your apps are, open the Settings app (looks like multiple grey gears)
2. Click "Display & Brightness" on the sidebar
3. Toggle off the option labeled "Automatic" and it should go back to white

It would be clearer if you could send a screenshot showing what you mean.

I wonder if you have some Accessibility adjustment turned on. In Settings>Accessibility, there are a number of rather (to people who don't need them) bizarre adjustments. In Accessibility, you can turn this:into this:

for instance.

So look around in Accessibility settings to see if this might be it. And let us know…
