Can't sort and veiw pictures downloaded from icloud in order date picture taken

My icloud is nearly full, so I downloaded some pictures to my macbook and store them on a external hard drive. But I can't view the photos I downloaded in the order they were taken. The sequence is mixed up based on the date and time the photos were downloaded from the cloud to my macbook. Could you give me advices?

Create a new iPhoto library and use that to manage your downloaded pics.

You can create a new library by pressing the option key while you launch iPhoto. You will be prompted to use a different library or create a new one. Click "Create..." then provide a name and location for the new library. You can create the library on your external drive if you wish.

This link is for the newer Photos app, but the steps are essentially the same:

Create additional photo libraries in Photos on Mac - Apple Support

Once you have created the new library, you can import those downloaded photos into it and manage them as you like, including editing of their time and location metadata.

To return to using your regular or other iPhoto library, simply press and hold the option key the next time you launch the app.

You're seeing the difference between a File Management System and an Image Management System.

Finder is a File Management System and, since the picture file was just created, it's reasonable that the image file shows that date.

But you were asking about the date the Image was created, and you'll see that if you look at the picture in an Image Management System. That's why D.I. Johnson suggested that you import the pictures to a new Photos Library-- Apps like Photos and Preview will see the Image Creation Date and ignore the File Creation Date.

If it's important to you, you can use some 3rd Party apps to change the File Date to the Image Create Date. These data are stored in the Exif metadata, so you can do an App search using that. I use  GraphicConverter ($40) for metadata stuff, but there are way cheaper things. I sometimes use the free! exifTool Reader to examine the metadata, but there are also exif editors that will let you change things.
