Limited Use for MacBook Pro 13"

I have an old MacBook Pro 13" and I can't upgrade to anything else for a while. I'm thinking that it could be used just as a place for my writing. Sometimes I need to be someplace other than my desk and using this laptop for writing could be quite convenient.

I was thinking that I could wipe everything off it and use it for awhile -- I hate to see it just sit. I'll be upgrading my whole Apple system (Mini, iPad, iPhone) in a few months, so for now I hope to make some good use of this old workhorse.

I'm running OS High Sierra 10.13.6. Is there even an upgrade to High Sierra that could help?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

What model year is it? The model year of a MacBook Pro is available at Apple menu > About This Mac.

A mid 2010 through late 2011 MacBook Pro can be upgraded to High Sierra 10.13.6 but no later version.

A mid 2012 through early 2013 MacBook Pro can be upgraded to Catalina 10.15.7 but no later.

A late 2013 and mid 2014 MacBook Pro can be upgraded to the latest version of Big Sur macOS 11 but no later.

An early 2015 through 2016 MacBook Pro can be upgraded to the latest version of Monterey macOS 12 but no later.

A 2017 MacBook Pro can be upgraded to the current version of Ventura macOS 13.

For all of the above, see instructions in: How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

A 2018 or later MacBook Pro can be upgraded to the current version of Sequoia macOS 15. See: How to upgrade to macOS Sequoia - Apple Support

Be careful about wiping it. You might have trouble getting it back to a usable state.

Even if you can reload a "clean" copy of High Sierra, you might not be able to

  • Reinstall Pages – the version in the App Store requires Sonoma or later.
  • Reinstall and use a purchased copy of Microsoft Office – due to Microsoft no longer supporting DRM activation of old versions of Office
  • Install LibreOffice, without searching through the archive of old and unsupported versions to find a version that will run on High Sierra

I'd suggest making a bootable clone backup on an external USB drive, using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!, and setting that aside, just in case you find yourself needing something to recover from.

Once you've done that – and migrated any data that you want to keep to a newer system – you may find it easier to simply delete files you don't need off the old MBP, rather than wiping it clean and starting all over from scratch. (Be careful with anything synchronized through iCloud. If you were synchronizing the old MBP to iCloud Photos, you'd want to turn off iCloud Photos BEFORE erasing photos so that you did not erase copies everywhere else.)

That way, you'll be trimming it down to whatever word processing applications you already have, that work, rather than wiping it down to nothing, then hoping you can get an OS and word processing applications installed again.
