I want to backup my mom's ipad to our families cloud storage.

[Name] -> iCloud -> iCloud Backup. Then select the device to backup.
Please note, if you don’t have an iCloud subscription on top of the basic storage that comes with your device/account, it may not be able to hold a backup. Given you referenced family, it seems likely it will work though. Good luck!
