MacBook Pro M3 and the Dell D6000 USB docking station connection issue? Here's the simple fix.

I purchased a new MacBook Pro and it would no longer connect to the D6000. I tried everything, but the only resolution I got was the USB-C to USB A adapter from Apple. Trying to connect with the USB - C connection didn't work to the MacBook USB C port (none of them). I tried just as a last ditch effort and it worked. I can now have the laptop and 2 monitors working.

If you are having the issue, please give it a try. Worst case scenario, you have a new dongle for other USB A devices.

That Dell dock is one with multiple video outputs that appears to use a combination of DisplayPort Alt Mode and DisplayLink.

It supports two types of uplinks:

  • USB 3.0 Type A (Via C-to-A converter)
  • USB-C (Support power delivery up to 65W)

USB-A isn't designed to carry video signals at all, so when you attach the thing via USB-A, all of the video outputs use the DisplayLink workaround. If you attach it to a USB-C port that offers DisplayPort Alt Mode then it might use that signal under some circumstances. The notes in the manual are not super-clear.

My advice to Mac users – at least to those whose Macs support two or more external monitors – would be to use a proper Thunderbolt dock, one designed for, and sold for, use with Macs.
