Creating a two page tiff document.

This is a follow up to a discussion from 2423 namely:  Creating a two page tiff document. - Apple Community

Back in 2423 I was successful at merging two tif files after VikingOSX guided me through a solution to my problem.  However, I failed recently.  I am 87 and my computer skills are rusty.  I am now on a new Mac mini M2 15.1.1.  I created the folder MacIntosh HD/User/robertdavis/Desktop/Experiment and placed two tiff images in it, namely 01.tiff and 02.tiff.  The two images were scanned using a CanoScan 8800F scanner and VueScan 9 a64 (9.8.41).  It is the same scanner that I used in 2423 but the VueScan is a fairly recently updated version.

This is the computer structure.

I ran this script with this result:

robertdavis@fiber-222 ~ % cd User/robertdavis/Desktop/Experiment

/usr/bin/tiffutil -cat *.tif -out multi.tif

cd: no such file or directory: User/robertdavis/Desktop/Experiment

zsh: no matches found: *.tif

After examining the manual that showed up on one of the runs

TIFFUTIL(1)                 General Commands Manual                TIFFUTIL(1)

NAME

     tiffutil - manipulates tiff files

SYNOPSIS

     tiffutil <option> [<arguments>] [-out <outfile>]

DESCRIPTION

tiffutil lets you manipulate TIFF files. The list of options (also

available by running the program without any options) follows:

     tiffutil -none             infile                  [-out outfile]

              -lzw              infile                  [-out outfile]

              -packbits         infile                  [-out outfile]

              -cat              infile1 [infile2 ...]   [-out outfile]

              -catnosizecheck   infile1 [infile2 ...]   [-out outfile]

              -cathidpicheck    infile1 [infile2 ...]   [-out outfile]

              -extract          num infile              [-out outfile]

              -info             infile

              -verboseinfo      infile

              -dump             infile

I tried a different script with this result:

Last login: Sun Jan  5 19:13:15 on ttys000

robertdavis@fiber-222 ~ % cd User/robertdavis/Desktop/Experiment

/usr/bin/tiffutil -cat 01.tif 02.tif -out multi.tif

cd: no such file or directory: User/robertdavis/Desktop/Experiment

Error: Failed to create image source for file 01.tif. Either it isn't a TIFF file, or there are unrecognized tags; try tiffutil -dump for more info.

Error: Failed to create image source for file 02.tif. Either it isn't a TIFF file, or there are unrecognized tags; try tiffutil -dump for more info.

Error: Can't read from file 01.tif.

No output file created due to errors.

FWIW, /usr/bin/tiffutil -cat *.tif -out multi.tif doesn't work. Your original command tiffutil -cat *.tiff -out multi.tiff does

I tried this script after renaming the files 01.tiff and 02.tiff:

Last login: Sun Jan  5 19:16:54 on ttys000

robertdavis@fiber-222 ~ % cd User/robertdavis/Desktop/Experiment

/usr/bin/tiffutil -cat *.tiff -out multi.tiff

cd: no such file or directory: User/robertdavis/Desktop/Experiment

zsh: no matches found: *.tiff

robertdavis@fiber-222 ~ %

What am I doing wrong?  I am sorry for the length of this post but I hope it will save the multiple steps it took back in 2423.

If you have separate scans to TIFF, then yes, you can use the tiffutil tool to combine (e.g. -cat) them. However, if it is the same scanning session, and your Canon scanner supports the VueScan Scan+ button, you can automatically append the individual scans by using that button. I just did this on macOS Sequoia v15.2 using VueScan Professional 9 a64 (9.8.43.04). The scanner is a Canon LiDE 400 model configured as an AirPrint USB device.

The Finder's Quick Look tool will not show you thumbnails for a multi-page TIFF, but once opened in Apple's Preview, you will see the multi-page TIFF results.

Yes I do that as well. However, occasionally I have scans that were done at separate times and other times I scan a large photo at high resolution and only want a low resolution image of a small portion of the back. For instance, an 8x10 color with the names of the individuals given on the back. My VueScan multipage tif scans have to use the same settings. Because I have so many images I sometimes want to keep the file size smaller. Thanks though.
